Catherine Birndorf, MD

Dr. Birndorf is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics & Gynecology at The New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical Center. She is Program Director of the Payne Whitney Women’s Program, a program designed to evaluate and treat women with emotional distress and psychiatric illness throughout the life cycle.
Board-certified in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine, Dr. Birndorf, a Smith College graduate, received her medical degree from Brown University and completed her psychiatry residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Payne Whitney Clinic, serving as chief resident. She is published in the area of both women’s mental health and medical student education. She has also been the recipient of numerous teaching and academic awards. Dr. Birndorf has lectured around the country on the topic of women’s mental health as well as appeared on local and national television including the Today Show, the CBS Evening News, and MSNBC. She is currently a contributing columnist for Self Magazine. She is the founder of the Women’s Mental Health Consortium, a newly created group of approximately 150 mental health professionals in the greater New York area.
