Universal Maternal Mental Health Symbol

Postpartum Support International (PSI) is sponsoring a contest to create a universal symbol for Maternal Mental Health. The purpose for a universal symbol is to help spread the word about Perinatal Mood Disorders and have an icon that all people involved in Maternal Mental Health can use.

From February 22 to March 31, 2014, all are welcome to send a design to symbol@postpartum.net.

Having a universal symbol will decrease stigma and identify those who use the symbol as people who are invested in helping mothers and families during this difficult time. The opportunity to talk with someone who is knowledgeable about Maternal Mental Health is very healing and helps everyone to normalize this disorder as a common complication of pregnancy. Having a symbol that is accepted by all is one way to increase knowledge and move toward the goal of communication and connection.

PSI feels strongly that the success of this symbol is based on teamwork by all who are involved with Maternal Mental Health and that having an open contest is an excellent way to include and honor all who help moms and families. The design needs to be simple but able to catch your eye, one that can be worn as jewelry as well as placed on printed material. Colors that have previously been designated as representative: Mental Health is emerald green and Maternal Mental Health is purple; however, you can use any colors or black and white.

The contest is open to all. PSI will be the collector of these designs and include key stakeholders in the Maternal Mental Health field to narrow the submission to the top 10. After selecting ten finalists, all images will be available for public voting from April 18 - April 30, 2014 at www.photoscramble.com. The design with the largest number of votes will be the winner.

May 3, 2014 The winning symbol will be announced here:
