Telemental Health Series

This PSI professional webinar series was created as a response to the immediate need for mental health providers to utilize telemental health platforms, using best practices and reliable technology. All sessions included attention to the priorities of confidentiality, client privacy and accessibility to telephone or teletherapy. Presenters are Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professionals (PMH-Cs) and experts in the use of teletherapy. Each session was presented live, with Q and A.

Session 1: 

  • Creating and Maintaining an Ethical Telemental Health Practice for Perinatal Mental Health Clients
    Jana Glass, LPC, MAC, PMH-C, BC-TMH
    This informative webinar will cover the steps to create and maintain an ethical and HIPAA compliant telemental health practice meeting the short term needs during COVID19 while creating a sustainable practice to use with clients who benefit from this mode of therapy. Additional topics will include: informed consent, safety planning, increasing comfort level with technology, and self care needed working with technology all day. There will also be time for Q and A along with time for participants to share some of the benefits and successes experienced with telemental health.

Session 2: 

  • Making Technology Work for Your Practice & Your Clients
    Jenna Daly, LCSW, PMH-C
    Developing and maintaining electronic health records and the use of technology in support of telemental health practice. Jenna will talk about choosing and optimizing tele-mental health products and services, with a focus on HIPAA and affordability, and the needs of anxious clients.
  • Supporting parents of young children and infants.
    Meyleen Velasquez, LCSW, PMH-C, RPT-S
    As perinatal mental health professionals, we are often searching for tools and strategies to support our clients effectively. The transition from in-person to online services requires adjusting interventions to realistically and reasonably help families. This webinar will explore the challenges that parents/caregivers of infants and young children are experiencing during this quarantine period and will provide professionals with techniques to support families.

Session 3:

  • Preparing for Childbirth in Anxious Times
    Laura Winters, LCSW, PMH-C
    Preparing for Childbirth in Anxious Times – Learn how to help couples prepare for the possibility of moms birthing alone. We will discuss strategies to help ease anxiety, ways to include partners and other support people, and communicating needs to medical professionals.
  • Addressing Loss and Bereavement
    Beth Shelton, LCSW, PMH-C
    Discussion of working with bereaved families in rural West TN who have experienced pregnancy or infant death. Challenges presented through telehealth, as well as benefits of the intervention.

Session 4:

  • Teletherapy to Address Trauma; EMDR in a Telemental Health format
    Mandy Wannarka, MSW, LICSW, PMH-C
    This presentation will inform mental health practitioners about the use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to heal trauma by briefly discussing the theoretical model of EMDR, protocol for its use, considerations for its use through telehealth and how it can be applied to reproductive health traumas.
  • Sensory Awareness for Grounding and Self-regulation for Perinatal Clients
    Helena Vissing, PsyD, PMH-C
    This presentation will focus on how providers can help new mothers and parents develop skills to orient to the stabilizing and joyful sensations of parenting to balance the overwhelm and symptoms of PMADs.

Session 5:

  • Supporting the needs of Military Families
    Corrie M. Avila, LCSW, CCTP, PMH-C, BC-TMH
    This presentation will help you develop methods and techniques for working with military families during the perinatal period utilizing technology and telehealth. Learn to recognize the risks specific to this population, implement techniques and build a strengths based approach, thus tapping into their resilience.
  • Working with Couples
    Bina Bird, MA, LMFT-S, PMH-C
    Couples therapy can be challenging enough in the office setting so the transition to telehealth can feel overwhelming. This presentation will focus on how to work with couples via telehealth and also address some of the common challenges couples are facing during this Covid 19 crisis.
