About

Dr. Nicole Cirino earned her BA degree at Santa Clara University in California, and her medical doctorate
at Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois. She completed her residency at
Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago before joining Northwestern University McGaw
Medical Center as Reproductive Psychiatry Fellow. She has been working in the field of Reproductive
Psychiatry since 2003, with a special interest in perinatal psychopathology and the impact of trauma,
specifically sexual trauma, on women’s mental and physical health. Nicole currently serves as Associate
Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and OBGYN at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU),
and as director of a large perinatal mood disorders clinic in the Women’s Mental Health and Wellness
Program at OHSU, where she and her colleagues see over fifty pregnant patients with perinatal
psychopathology per week. Nicole’s other area of interest is female sexual medicine, and she has
pursued this area of interest specifically to treat women with sexual dysfunction from sexual trauma and
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her training includes American Academy of Sexual Therapists,
Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) sex therapy certification and advanced training in treating sexual
trauma in women including the use of Prolonged Exposure (PE), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

Dr. Cirino has co-authored multiple journal articles and is recognized nationally as an expert in the field
of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). She has a history of collaborating with other faculty
across multiple disciplines in the field of women’s health. Her current research projects includes studies
of treatment for women with a variety of mental health and reproductive issues, including a
translational treatment study of MBCT-PD with pregnant women with histories of childhood
maltreatment.
