Susan Dowd Stone, MSW, LCSW, PMH-C was president of Postpartum Support International, (2006 – 2008), the organization’s vice-president and Conference Chair (2005 – 2006) and Chair of the President’s Advisory Council (2008- 2010.) She is a NJHSS Certified Perinatal Mood Disorders Instructor, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the MSW program at the Silver School of Social Work, New York University, where she presents on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy in the Masters and post masters programs. Intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy while working at Hackensack University Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry, she completed her DBT Advanced Intensive Training with Marsha Linehan in NYC May 2015. While at HUMC, she helped form and facilitate the Postpartum Psychotherapy program which helped assess, identify and treat women at risk or diagnosed with perinatal mood disorders and specifically focused on bringing DBT skills to new moms in group work. Her co-edited book, Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders: Perspectives and Treatment Guide for the Healthcare Practitioner (Stone & Menken, eds, Springer, 2008), has been adopted by professional education programs around the world and references Dialectical Behavior Therapy as a powerful approach for the emotional tasks and challenges of parenting. She has also presented workshops on Perinatal Mood Disorders, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Interpersonal Psychotherapy at New York University through the Center of Global and Lifelong Learning, Columbia University through the Social Work Office of Professional Excellence, and at many other graduate and agency based programs through the sponsorship of NASW NYC. The groundbreaking text, Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Clinical Social Work Practice,(Ronen & Freeman,eds, Springer 2006) for which she authored a chapter referencing the utilization of DBT in the perinatal period. She is a former public reviewer for the National Institute of Mental Health, contributing evaluative viewpoint on research designed to treat mood disorders. Ms. Stone received her MSW from New York University where she was the recipient of a President’s Service Award. Other awards include the Golden Bell Leadership Award from the Mental Health Association in New Jersey and a SPARKS Advocacy Award for maternal mental health presented on Capitol Hill by Congressman Bobby L. Rush. Her work with other notable advocates was pivotal in the inclusion of maternal mental health in the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act. She has been a frequent expert media source/consultant for developing stories, documentaries and educational programs. Ms. Stone maintains a private practice in Englewood Cliffs NJ specializing in women’s mental health across the life cycle where she has helped hundreds of women and their families recover from antenatal and postpartum mood episodes. Her treatment modalities include CBT, DBT, EMDR and psychodynamic focus.
