Birdie Gunyon Meyer, RN, MA, PMH-C

Tell us about PSI’s advanced trainings in perinatal mental health. We offer Advanced Psychotherapy, Advanced Psychopharmacology, Perinatal Loss: Clinical and Supportive Care, and Foundations in Paternal Perinatal Mental Health. All these trainings count toward the PMH-C advanced training requirement. Full descriptions of each PSI training are available here.

Who is the appropriate audience for advanced psychotherapy and advanced psychopharmacology? Advanced Psychopharmacology is intended to be an advanced training for prescribers. You can sign up if you are not a prescriber, but it is designed for prescribers (MDs, DOs, NPs, CNMs, PAs, CNs, APRNs). The training is not intended for someone who does not have basic training in psychopharmacology. Advanced Psychotherapy goes deeper into the subjects covered in the 2-day Components of Care training, plus more. The intended audience is psychotherapists (therapists/psychologists). Anyone is welcome to take Advanced Psychotherapy, including prescribers, doulas, and nurses (all disciplines) – it is a great training for anyone. Foundations in Paternal Perinatal Mental Health is intended for psychotherapists, medical providers, and allied birth professionals. Perinatal Loss: Clinical and Supportive Care is intended for birth workers, therapists, nurses, and other psychotherapy and medical providers.

When are the advanced trainings offered? Advanced Psychotherapy is offered as a third-day option following a 2-day Components of Care training. Advanced Psychopharmacology is sometimes offered after Components of Care, but is currently only offered virtually, four to five times per year. Perinatal Loss: Clinical and Supportive Care and Foundations in Paternal Perinatal Mental Health are offered in-person only and are offered at the annual PSI conference and four to five times per year in cities around the U.S. and by request. If you are interested in bringing the 2-day Components of Care training or any of the advanced trainings to your area, you can make the request here.

What is the benefit of adding advanced training to the Components of Care training? The advanced trainings go more in-depth on topics covered in Components of Care. A question to ask yourself: Does the advanced training advance your skills in your line of work? Additionally, if you are pursuing a PMH-C, you need six hours of advanced training to qualify for the exam.

Is material from the advanced trainings included in the PMH-C exam? The PMH-C exam material is taken from Components of Care and the PSI webinar series; all foundational material. The advanced trainings add to your knowledge, but PMH-C exam questions will come from foundational material.
